The Department of International Cooperation, Culture and Marketing has suspended renovation work at the entrance of a building at 75 Novoselsky Street in the center of Odesa because of the ancient frescoes.
According to the press service of the Odesa municipality, the inspection revealed that the workers had not dismantled the frescoes, but rather discovered them during the repair work.
Employees of the Renaissance management company carried out spot repairs to the entrance at the request of the residents. In the process of cleaning the walls from layers of old paint, the workers came across artistic murals that were probably painted over in Soviet times. Inspectors from the city's Department for the Protection of Cultural Heritage arrived at the scene. Now experts will have to conduct a detailed assessment of the find, determine its historical and artistic value, and provide recommendations for further work.
On January 16, residents of 75 Novoselskoho Street in the center of Odesa reported that a 100-year-old fresco was being dismantled during renovations.
Residents of the building said that the mural had been there before and was in poor condition. During the Soviet period, it was also painted over, then the plaster fell off and the fresco was clearly visible. It was two floors high, and the builders were just starting to shade the mural again.
House No. 75 on Novoselsky Street in Odesa is an architectural monument known as the Blizhensky House. It was built before 1910 (probably 1902-1903) and is known for the fact that it was purchased by the First Guild merchant M. M. Blizhenskyi in 1910 and belonged to his heirs until the revolution, and the house itself was built in the Neo-Renaissance style.
