Quarantine introduced in one of the cities in Odesa region due to rabies outbreak

Quarantine restrictions have been imposed on a part of the city of Izmail since September 12 due to rabies cases.

This was reported by the press service of the Izmail District Administration.

According to Natalia Muntyan, acting head of the Izmail District Department of the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection, several streets in the city where outbreaks of the disease were recorded were recognized as dangerous. These areas include Dunaysky and Chekhov lanes, as well as Mira, Pirogov, Dachnaya and other streets.

To stop the spread of rabies, the city approved an action plan for the prevention and elimination of the disease. Specialists have already begun the relevant work.

The Izmail administration noted that if an animal is bitten, it should not be destroyed - it is important to isolate it for 10 days for observation and immediately inform a veterinarian. If predators, such as foxes or wolves, appear near livestock and bite them, local authorities should be informed.

"Any wild animal that behaves in an unusual way may be a carrier of rabies, and it is not allowed to skin such an animal. Suspicious cases should be immediately investigated by veterinarians. Particular attention should be paid to unusual behavior of pets in order to detect possible signs of rabies in time," the statement said.

Residents were urged to avoid unnecessary contact with animals, especially children.

In July, Izmail was already quarantined due to a rabies outbreak.

In addition, in early April, the Odesa Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported that since the beginning of the year, 84 confirmed cases of rabies among animals had been recorded in the Odesa region. The number of cases of animal bites of humans is also increasing in the region.

Also in the spring, the Odesa Regional State (Military) Administration issued an order to form groups of hunters to shoot predators. This was justified by the fact that cases of rabies had become more frequent in the region. At the same time, the management of the Tuzly Estuaries National Nature Park doubts the data provided by the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection and considers it manipulative.
