After several unsuccessful attempts, members of the Mykolaiv City Council finally supported a draft decision on changes to the procedure for the operation of the household waste sorting complex. The document, which could not be adopted at the previous two sessions, provides for updating the mechanism of the future waste sorting complex and launching a tender to determine the waste sorting operator.

This became known to Intent during the 53rd regular session of the Mykolaiv City Council.

According to the decision, the Department of Housing and Communal Services is to announce a tender to determine the waste sorting entity in Mykolaiv within 10 days.

The explanation to the document states that the need to launch the complex arose due to overcrowding of landfills and the lack of new landfills. The document emphasizes that Mykolaiv actually has only one certified solid waste landfill in the village of Vesniane, while other landfills are spontaneous and environmentally hazardous.

The new procedure defines the technical requirements for the future complex. It is a facility with a capacity of up to 170,000 tons of waste per year and sorting of paper, plastic, glass, metal and other fractions.

The document also provides for the creation of a tender committee and a system for evaluating participants. Preference is to be given to companies with experience in waste recycling, financing, land and the ability to launch the complex quickly.

During the discussion around the project, Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Senkevych said that the international French company Veolia was interested in participating in the tender for the management of the household waste sorting complex.

At the same time, one of the deputies emphasized that they could create such a line themselves and earn money themselves. A conflict arose at the session over this issue.

The mayor emphasized that the city has created many such enterprises, and one of them is engaged in processing construction waste that arose after the shelling.

Now the city council says that the decision will allow them to move to the practical stage of implementing the waste sorting project in Mykolaiv.

Last year in September, the police opened a case over possible abuses by Mykolaiv City Council officials during a tender for waste sorting. The investigation focuses on the process of selecting a contractor to provide sorting services, with a project budget of UAH 1.25 billion.

Back in September 2024, MPs voted to approve the procedure for the tender for the construction of a sorting station, but the document did not gain support at first. At the time, Senkevych emphasized that this was a technical issue that needed to be approved.
