A 22-year-old man was detained in Odesa who agreed to set fire to a truck found through a messenger in exchange for money. He did not receive the promised earnings, and now faces up to 10 years in prison.
This was reported by the press service of the National Police in Odesa region.
Law enforcement officers got on the trail and detained a man suspected of setting fire to a car in Odesa. The incident occurred last week, and the police received information about it from local residents. Eyewitnesses said that in the evening they noticed an unknown young man setting fire to a DAF truck. The people extinguished the fire on their own and tried to catch up with the attacker, but he managed to escape.
As a result of operational and investigative measures, the suspect was identified. It was a 22-year-old resident of Odesa.
According to the investigation, the guy was looking for a job through messengers, where he met an unknown person who offered him to set fire to a truck for a monetary reward of UAH 40 thousand. After agreeing to this "job", he chose a truck parked on a street in Khadzhibey district, took a picture of it and sent it to the so-called curator for approval.
Subsequently, the suspect purchased gasoline, poured it on the front of the vehicle and set it on fire. He filmed his actions on video as a confirmation of the task. When he was noticed by passers-by, he fled the scene. The owner of the damaged truck is a 56-year-old man. Thanks to the prompt actions of citizens, the fire was quickly extinguished, so large-scale consequences were avoided. The amount of damage is currently being established.
The arsonist did not receive the promised reward - a few hours after the crime, he was detained by law enforcement officers in accordance with the procedure provided by law.
Investigators served the man a notice of suspicion. This crime is punishable by imprisonment for up to 10 years. The court imposed on the suspect a pre-trial restraint in the form of detention with the possibility of bail in the amount of UAH 266,240.
Odesa law enforcement also served a notice of suspicion to a man who set fire to a car for a reward. The police found out that the man agreed to set fire to other people's cars for UAH 1,000 at the signal of a stranger via a messenger.
