The Council of Europe has called for a local ceasefire in Oleshky

Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Michael O'Flaherty called for an immediate local ceasefire in the occupied town of Oleshky. He stressed the need to immediately provide the civilian population with food and medicine, as well as to open a safe corridor for the evacuation of people.

This is stated in a statement by Michael O’Flaherty.

The Commissioner noted that he is concerned about the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Oleshky. 

Civilians, particularly children, have been cut off without sufficient food, medicine, medical care, water, or electricity. According to reports, they face a high risk of death,” O’Flaherty said.

He pointed out that, under international humanitarian law, Russia, as the occupying power, has an obligation to provide the population with food and medical supplies and to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid.

A poster reading“Save the Oleshkas” was also spotted at the Ukraine-Hungary soccer match.

As previously reported by Intent,the All-Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations called on the UN, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and global religious leaders to urgently facilitate the evacuation of residents from occupied Oleshky.

Oleshky was occupied by Russia in the early days of the full-scale invasion in February 2022. The city is located on the left bank of the Dnipro River, which currently serves as a natural barrier between the liberated and occupied parts of the Kherson region.
