The vacationers who died in the explosions in Odesa region on August 10 were swimming on beaches that could have been mined in 2022 to prevent Russians from landing in Odesa region.
The head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration, Oleh Kiper, said this during a briefing on August 11.
According to him, the beaches were equipped with warning signs prohibiting swimming.
"I want to emphasize that you need to pay attention to the signs about the ban. You know that in 2022, the military did everything to prevent the Russians from landing their troops. And I know for sure about the places where the tragedies took place that they were considered favorable for enemy ships to approach the coast. That is why the military took precautionary measures," emphasized Oleg Kiper.
He emphasized that there are beaches in Odesa region where swimming is allowed, but it is impossible to close all dangerous beaches.
"Our people are quite stubborn. They still climb over those concrete barriers and ignore the signs. Only a five-meter fence can stop them. I have seen elderly people jumping over those fences. If a Ukrainian wants to swim in the sea, you can't stop him," he said.
Oleg Kiper also emphasized that the regional administration has no right to prohibit hotels and recreation centers in resort villages from operating, because businessmen only sell places to stay, and they do not control the coast and sea.
The head of the OVA also noted that in addition to the places that were mined against the landing force, there is also a danger of anchor mines being thrown onto the coast.
According to the police, there were two explosions, and according to preliminary data, three vacationers were killed - a woman and two men. One man died in Karolino-Buhaz, and another man and woman died in Zatoka.
