Starting September 22, a new six-zone fare system for commuter trains will take effect in the Odesa and Mykolaiv regions. The ticket price will depend on the distance traveled but will be fixed within each zone.
This was announced by Ukrzaliznytsia.
The new model includes six fare zones. Passengers will pay the same amount for a trip within a given range of kilometers, regardless of the exact distance.
For the Odesa and Mykolaiv regions, the new fares will take effect on September 22. On the same day, the system will be introduced in the Dnipropetrovsk and Cherkasy regions.
Fares will be as follows:
- up to 50 km — 30 hryvnias;
- 51–90 km – 55 hryvnias;
- 91–130 km — 75 hryvnias;
- 131–170 km – 95 hryvnias;
- 171–250 km – 115 hryvnias;
- over 250 km – 150 hryvnias.
Ukrzaliznytsia explained that commuter rail service currently remains unprofitable. Among the reasons cited are issues with compensation for transporting passengers eligible for discounts, as well as rising costs of electricity, fuel, and other resources.
The company noted that the new system is expected to partially reduce losses without significantly increasing the cost of travel. Passengers traveling the maximum distance within their fare zone will not experience any price increase at all.
The changes are also expected to help preserve existing commuter routes and stops, with additional funds directed toward the repair and modernization of trains.
The new system was first introduced on September 15 in the Kyiv, Chernihiv, and Zhytomyr regions. Eventually, the six-zone model is set to be implemented in other regions of Ukraine as well.
As Intent previously reported, two trains connecting Odesa with other Ukrainian cities ranked among the top five most popular routes by passenger volume during the summer of 2026.
