Lesia Ukrainka Park and no Chapaeva Street: Odesa residents can influence the renaming

Starting May 1, Odesa residents are invited to vote online to rename some city streets and choose a name for a park.

This was reported by the Odesa City Council.

The decision to rename was initiated in accordance with the Charter of the territorial community and on the basis of the recommendations of the historical and toponymic commission of the Odesa City Council.

Odesa residents who have reached the age of 18 will be able to take part in the voting. The survey is posted on the Odesa City Council's web portal "Socially Active Citizen" in the electronic service "Public Discussion".

The following proposals are up for discussion:

  • Chapaeva Street - to be renamed to Vyacheslav Kirilov Street (Peresypsky district).
  • Kanatnyi Lane - to Mihai Eminescu Lane (Primorskyi district).
  • The park at the corner of Fontanska Road and Lesia Ukrainka Avenue should be renamed Lesia Ukrainka Park (Prymorskyi district).
  • Serednya Street - to Oleksandr Svishcha Street (Khadzhibeysky district).

Voting is conducted for each object separately with the opportunity to leave substantiated comments. The voting process can be tracked in real time.

The survey will be conducted until July 1 at 10:00.

Earlier, the Department of International Cooperation of Culture and Marketing of the Odesa City Council reported that the city council does not plan to rename some streets and alleys of the city after Russian cultural figures, politicians and military.

Earlier, activists of the organization Decolonization. Ukraine organization appealed to the Odesa City Council to dismantle 40 memorial plaques in the city, which they attributed to the Soviet and imperial heritage.

Meanwhile, activists of the NGO Decolonization.Ukraine have once again updated their map with the number of streets that they believe should be renamed, reducing their number in Odesa Oblast to 200.
