On January 1, Transnistria stopped supplying heat and hot water to households and businesses. This was the result of the suspension of Russian gas transportation through Ukraine.

As reported by Tirasteploenergo, the supply of heat energy to the population, budgetary institutions and organizations of all forms of ownership was stopped at 07:00. Exceptions were made only for healthcare and social welfare institutions where people are undergoing inpatient treatment or care.

Local authorities banned the use of gas and electric stoves to heat homes, advising residents to dress warmly and take preventive medications against seasonal illnesses.

On December 9, the so-called leader of Transnistria, Vadim Krasnosilsky, declared a state of economic emergency due to the threat of a Russian gas cutoff.

Starting at 7:00 a.m. on January 1, Ukraine stopped the transit of Russian natural gas through its territory.

According to the Ministry of Energy, this was done "in the interests of national security." Ukraine also informed its international partners about this.

"We have stopped the transit of Russian gas. This is a historic event. Russia is losing markets, it will suffer financial losses. Europe has already made a decision to refuse Russian gas. And the European initiative Repower EU envisages exactly what Ukraine has done today," said Minister Herman Galushchenko.

The relevant agency assured that the infrastructure of Ukraine's gas transportation system was "prepared in advance to operate in a zero-transit mode and ensure reliable gas supply to Ukrainian consumers."

According to the GTS Operator of Ukraine, in preparation for the new conditions, it has agreed to increase guaranteed capacities to ensure the possibility of gas supplies both to Ukraine and through Ukraine to European consumers.

"In 2024, for the first time, Ukraine received guaranteed capacities increased in the southern direction - the Vertical Corridor - and also made guaranteed capacities from Poland," the state-owned company reminded.

The second area of preparation for zero transit, according to the GTSOU, was the optimization of the cost side: gas consumption for own needs was significantly reduced, and a significant number of assets that are not involved in the operation of the gas transmission system were optimized.
