The two final versions of the Mykolaiv region's coat of arms were approved at a meeting of the Standing Committee on Science and Education, Innovation, Youth, Family and Sports, Culture and Spirituality.

This was reported on the website of the Mykolaiv Regional Council.

Two versions of the coat of arms were submitted to the commission. The first is the traditional version of St. Nicholas for the region. The second is the so-called "Olvian" version, which refers to the ancient history of the region, i.e. the city of Olbia. The discussion emphasized the need to maintain a balance between tradition and modern trends. "Today it is extremely important to adopt symbols that will reflect the history, present and future of Mykolaiv region. We have proposed worthy options for consideration that have undergone professional evaluation and public discussion. During the commission's work, many different opinions were voiced, but all of them were aimed at choosing the most balanced solution for the region," said Yevhen Horburov, chairman of the standing committee.

During the discussion, the members of the commission tried to identify the advantages and disadvantages of each project. The advantage of the coat of arms with St. Nicholas is its recognizability. The very name of the city comes from the name of the saint. The question is whether he should be considered part of the Russian imperial tradition or a timeless religious symbol. The "Olvia" coat of arms, on the other hand, allows us to dive deeper into the ancient history of the region and completely step back from religious and imperial associations.

Based on the results of the commission's meeting, it is planned to submit drafts of the coat of arms and the corresponding flag - depicting St. Nicholas and the Olbian polis - to the thirty-fifth extraordinary session of the regional council.

Earlier, three versions of the coat of arms were submitted for consideration, but the project "with a deer and a spear" was rejected during the discussions.
