The head of one of the departments of the Odessa Regional Criminal Investigation Department and Joint Operations Unit was detained on suspicion of corruption. According to investigators, he demanded 500 liters of diesel fuel in exchange for removing a person from the wanted list.

This was reported by the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Odessa region.

The maximum penalty for this crime is 10 years in prison. The court ordered the suspect to be held in custody with the right to post bail in the amount of 599,040 hryvnias.

According to the case file, an employee of one of the companies approached the suspect to inquire about the procedure for paying a fine on behalf of a man who was wanted for tax and customs violations and who wanted to be hired by the company. The official offered to “resolve the issue” in exchange for vouchers for 500 liters of diesel fuel, with a total value of nearly 45,000 hryvnias. He threatened that if the man refused, the conscript could face negative consequences.

The man who approached the official reported this information to law enforcement. The chief was detained after his subordinate, acting on his instructions, received the illegal benefit. Law enforcement officials report that the employee of the Territorial Military Registration and Enlistment Office who accepted the fuel vouchers was unaware of his supervisor’s criminal intentions.

Earlier in Odesa, police and the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) detained an officer from the district Military Registration and Enlistment Office and the Special Forces while he was accepting a bribe in the form of 1,000 liters of diesel fuel. In exchange for the bribe, the suspect was supposed to resolve the issue of removing a conscript from the wanted list and declaring him fit for service in non-combat units.
