Polina Soroka, an employee of the Izmail Commercial Sea Port, has successfully passed a professional exam and received a 4th category crane operator qualification. From now on, she can officially operate the Gantz portal crane.
This was reported by the port's press service.
Polina has been working at the port for almost two years, starting her career right after school. The young woman had to combine work and raising her three-year-old son, but she did not stop at the position of a hoistman and wanted more. Initially, she wanted to become a mechanical dockworker, but she was offered an equally responsible job - operating a crane.
Back in the 70s and 80s, the port of Izmail had female crane crews, but since 1983, women have been allowed to work only in lighter areas. However, four crane operators then defended their right to remain in this position. It seems that their example inspired Polina to follow her dream.
In 2024, she completed the training, mastered all the necessary skills, and received permission to work at height. And thanks to the support of her mentors and colleagues, she successfully passed the exam.
However, Polina doesn't plan to stop there. She wants to master the operation of all types of forklifts, including Terex Fuchs.
Vitaliy Bozadzhi, head of PVR, emphasized that the crane operator's profession is no longer a purely male one: "Times are changing, and we are proud that women are also learning this profession."
Meanwhile, Mykolaivpastrans has hired female drivers. The first female bus driver has already been officially employed and is undergoing an internship at the company.
The war in Ukraine has exacerbated the shortage of workers, so the government decided to expand opportunities for women.
