Police officers detained in Odesa on suspicion of extortion from drivers

Employees of the State Bureau of Investigation, with the assistance of the Security Service of Ukraine, exposed law enforcement officers who set up a scheme to make money off of people liable for military service in Odesa.

This was reported by the SBI press service.

According to the investigation, two law enforcement officers stopped cars whose owners were subject to mobilization while patrolling and demanded money for not delivering them to one of the territorial centers of recruitment and social support in Odesa. They charged from 2 thousand US dollars for their services, depending on the capabilities of the person liable for military service.

On February 4, 2026, the Bureau detained the law enforcement officers after receiving money from one of the drivers. The detainees were served a notice of suspicion of receiving an unlawful benefit by an official. The issue of choosing a custody as a form of detention is being decided. The sanction of the article provides for up to 10 years of imprisonment.

Earlier, in Odesa region, the case of a district recruitment center officer and two law enforcement officers suspected of a corruption scheme involving military registration was brought to court. According to the investigation, in exchange for money, they promised to exclude persons liable for military service from the search database.

Prosecutors of the Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi Specialized Defense Prosecutor's Office of the Southern Region submitted an indictment to the court against an officer of the Bolhradskyi District Military Commissariat and JV and two law enforcement officers. The investigation believes that in exchange for money, they helped persons liable for military service to be removed from the Oberig database.
