Mykolaiv region has seen a significant increase in electricity production, which fosters the development of alternative energy. The largest growth is observed in the production of energy from wind and solar power plants, which gives Mykolaiv region significant advantages in the energy sector.

According to the Mykolaiv Region Development Strategy until 2027, the growth in energy production from wind and solar power plants is particularly significant. Compared to 2018, the total capacity of alternative energy in the region has increased to 1013.368 MW.

Currently, the region provides electricity from a variety of sources: a nuclear power plant, 5 hydroelectric power plants, 5 cogeneration plants, a combined heat and power plant, 6 bioenergy power plants, as well as wind and solar power plants.

In 2023, the total amount of electricity generated in the Mykolaiv region amounted to 20,120.9 million kWh. Wind and solar power plants are particularly prominent, with their capacity increasing to 910.6 million kWh and 725.3 million kWh, respectively.

The heat and power sector of Mykolaiv region includes 1091 boiler houses, of which 639 operate on alternative fuel sources instead of natural gas. Of these, 189 boiler houses use wood fuel and pellets.

New solar power plants are also being actively built as part of the energy sector development, and the high wind energy potential of the region opens up prospects for further investment.

The Ochakiv and Berezan wind fields with a total area of 4,000 hectares have the potential to accommodate wind farms with a total capacity of 1,500 to 2,500 MW, which will add even more energy opportunities for the region.

In January 2025, DTEK Group and Vestas, the world leader in wind turbines, signed an agreement to build the second phase of the Tiligul wind farm in Mykolaiv region. The estimated cost of the construction project exceeds four hundred million euros.

Mykolaiv is also planning to create an energy "island" capable of supplying the city with electricity even during long power outages. Thanks to international partners, the city is working on a gas generation project that will provide electricity at least on an hourly basis in the event of blackouts.

Another important project in Mykolaiv is the construction of a modern wind farm, for which it is planned to attract more than UAH 800 million. The main goal of the project is to ensure a stable supply of electricity for Mykolaivoblteploenergo, which will reduce dependence on fossil energy sources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and contribute to the sustainable development of the region.
