Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Senkevych stated that the city lacks the resources to independently raise salaries for cultural workers. It was decided to raise this issue with the central government.

This was reported by the Mykolaiv City Council.

According to Senkevych, Mykolaiv will advocate for a differentiated approach to municipalities based on their financial situation.

“Raising people’s salaries is the right idea. But shifting the financial burden of this decision onto local budgets—which are already struggling to cover their own expenses—is not a solution. Mykolaiv currently lacks the resources for this,” he emphasized.

The mayor also noted that for frontline communities facing significant budget shortfalls, this issue must be resolved with state support.

The mayor pointed out that employees of cultural institutions receive extremely low wages. In many cases, these wages amount to less than 8,000 hryvnias per month.

In the Mykolaiv region, as of July 1, wage arrears had risen to 119,948,700 hryvnias. Employees in the Mykolaiv district were owed the most—85,921,700 hryvnias.

The Voznesensk District ranks second in terms of arrears, with 15,512,000 hryvnias owed. In the Pervomaisky District, wage arrears reached 12,072,000 hryvnias. In the Bashtanka District, employees were underpaid by 6,442,000 hryvnias.
