Man planning to set fire to shopping mall detained in Odesa region

A 22-year-old resident of Izmail was served a notice of suspicion of attempted obstruction of the lawful activities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He faces eight years in prison for his actions.

According to the police of Odesa region, a few days ago at night, the attacker tried to set fire to the building of one of the district territorial centers for recruitment and social support(TSC and SS) by throwing a burning self-made device with flammable liquid. However, the container did not ignite when it fell near the entrance to the building.

"Fortunately, no people were injured and no property was damaged," the statement said.

Law enforcement officers found that a 22-year-old local resident was involved in the crime. He was found at his place of residence and detained in accordance with the law. The suspect did not provide any explanations for his actions.

During the search, investigators seized evidence from the crime scene and the young man's house and sent it for expert examination.

Given the sufficient evidence, the police, under the procedural supervision of the Izmail District Prosecutor's Office, served the detainee a notice of suspicion of attempted obstruction of the lawful activities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations during a special period. The issue of choosing a measure of restraint against the suspect and transferring the criminal proceedings for further investigation to the SBU is currently being decided.

Earlier, a Vinnytsia city court found a 17-year-old native of the village of Shabo, Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi district, Odesa region, guilty of sabotage and sentenced him to five years in prison without confiscation of property. On July 6, 2024, in the city of Vinnytsia, a minor boy set fire to the building of the shopping center using an incendiary mixture that he had made himself.
