In Odessa, a teacher was paid 6,000 hryvnias after falling from a school window

In Odesa, a teacher at Elementary School No. 53, who fell from a window while washing windows, is still on sick leave and has received compensation of 6,000 hryvnias.

This is stated in a response from the Odessa City Council’s Department of Education and Science to a request from Intent.

According to the local education office of the Khadzhibey District, teacher Olesya Brovchenko remains employed by the school and has been on sick leave due to temporary incapacity for work from August 3, 2026, to the present. Once she has recovered, she will return to her duties.

The department also reported that Brovchenko received financial assistance in the amount of 6,000 hryvnias from the city’s “Educators of Odesa” trade union.

In addition, according to the school administration, the teacher is receiving support and assistance from her colleagues and the parent community.

As reported by Intent, the incident occurred in early August at Elementary School No. 53 on 35B Heroiv Krut Street. A 34-year-old elementary school teacher fell from a second-floor window while washing windows.

The victim, who suffered severe injuries, was taken to City Hospital No. 10. Doctors diagnosed her with open fractures of both shins and severe traumatic shock. Her condition was assessed as moderate.

The State Labor Inspectorate investigated the causes and circumstances of the accident.

Yulia Filler , director of the Odessa Department of Education,told Intent that she hadnotbeen instructed to wash the windows but did so on her own initiative.

According to the official, she personally visited the injured teacher in the hospital. At that time, her condition was assessed as satisfactory.

The teacher was diagnosed with fractures of the heels of both feet. One of the injuries turned out to be more severe. Due to swelling, doctors have not yet performed surgery.

The decision regarding the need for surgery was to be made following a follow-up examination and consultations with several specialists.
