A member of the illegal armed group "Self-Defense of Crimea", who helped the enemy to occupy the peninsula, was sentenced to 13 years in prison.

This was reported by the press service of the Prosecutor's Office of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol.

The post says that a fighter of the IAF "Self-Defense of Crimea" coordinated by the aggressor state was sentenced in absentia to 13 years in prison under public prosecution of the autonomy's prosecutor 's office. He was found guilty of high treason (Part 1 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine), participation in armed groups not provided for by law (Part 2 of Article 260 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine) and encroachment on the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine (Part 2 of Article 110 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

Thus, prosecutors proved in court that in February 2014, a citizen of Ukraine joined the ranks of the IAF "Self-Defense of Crimea" as a "fighter of the 16th company". His duties included "protecting" government buildings, blocking military units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, patrolling the streets, and identifying and detaining pro-Ukrainian residents of the peninsula.

In particular, on February 26, 2014, the convict, armed with a firearm, arrived at the building of the Verkhovna Rada of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea in Simferopol, where a rally in support of the territorial integrity and inviolability of Ukraine was taking place. Together with other "self-defense" members, he assisted Russian law enforcement agencies in dispersing the rally participants and seizing the building of the Verkhovna Rada of the AR of Crimea. In addition, in March 2014, the "fighter" guarded and ensured the illegal "referendum" on the accession of the peninsula to the Russian Federation. Later, the convict was appointed "assistant to the head of the Crimean Republican Headquarters of the People's Militia - People's Guard of the Republic of Crimea". He was awarded medals "For the Return of Crimea" and "For the Defense of Crimea" for the conscientious fulfillment of the tasks set by the occupiers. The convict also received a commendation "for competent and clear actions during his service" from the deputy head of the "Crimean Republican Headquarters of the People's Militia of the People's Guard of the Republic of Crimea", whose indictment is being considered by the court.

The special pre-trial investigation was carried out by investigators of the Main Department of the National Police in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol.
