Renaming and Decolonization of Toponyms
Renaming is the official replacement of names of geographical objects, streets, squares, and other toponyms. In the Ukrainian context, this process is often associated with decolonization — the removal of names derived from Soviet heritage or of Russian origin. Renaming is an important part of national identification and the restoration of historical memory in Ukrainian cities and regions, especially in southern Ukraine. Such changes are coordinated by historical-toponymic commissions and public organizations.
