Exchange of prisoners and return of military personnel
Prisoner exchange is a process of returning prisoners of war and other detained persons between parties to an armed conflict. In the context of Russian aggression against Ukraine, such exchanges involve the release of Ukrainian military personnel and civilians who have fallen into Russian captivity in exchange for the release of Russian servicemen. Prisoner exchanges are regulated by international humanitarian law, in particular the Geneva Conventions, and are an important aspect of humanitarian work during armed conflict.
