The head of an unrecognized state entity in Moldova's Transnistrian region, Vadim Krasnosilsky, has ordered the renaming of Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg streets in Tiraspol, which is considered the capital of Transnistria by the local regime.
He also believes that a street in the city should be renamed in honor of Klara Tsetkin, the Newsmaker publication reported.
According to the leader of Transnistria, these people did nothing useful for the region and for Tiraspol in particular, so they do not deserve to be immortalized in street names, and the streets should be returned to the names they had before they were renamed in honor of communist figures.
In particular, the historical name of Karl Liebknecht Street in Tiraspol is Craftsman Street, and Rosa Luxemburg Street is Chapel Street. The renaming is proposed to be similar to 25 October Street, which was renamed Pokrovska 10 years ago. It was decided then that the two names would be used for 10 years.
Earlier, in unrecognized Transnistria, during a meeting of the Joint Control Commission (JCC), they discussed the issue of eliminating checkpoints in the border area with Moldova, which were illegally installed in 2022.
Entrances and exits from settlements in the eastern regions of Moldova have already been unblocked, concrete barriers have been dismantled, and the accompanying infrastructure of the checkpoints has been dismantled. On January 1, Transnistria stopped supplying heat and hot water to households and businesses. This was the result of the suspension of Russian gas transportation through Ukraine. On December 9, 2024, the so-called leader of Transnistria, Vadim Krasnosilsky, declared a state of economic emergency due to the threat of a cutoff in Russian gas supplies.
In February, the Transnistrian authorities refused to accept €60 million from the European Union to finance gas purchases.
