Wreckage from a drone was found near the capital of Moldova

On the night of September 18, a loud explosion was heard in the Moldovan village of Colonita, 2 kilometers from the eastern outskirts of Chisinau. Police later found debris at the scene, presumably from a drone.

According to NewsMaker, the Moldovan Ministry of Defense, commenting on reports of the explosion, stated that no violations of the country’s airspace were recorded that night.

The ministry emphasized that there had been no unauthorized overflights in the past 24 hours.

“As for the cause of this nighttime incident, it is currently being investigated,” the ministry added.

When asked whether radar systems could have failed to detect a drone flying over the country’s territory, the Ministry of Defense replied: “In this case, we cannot speak in terms of probability. We must speak with certainty, based on the data we have.”

Later, the police reported that after searching the area near the village of Kolonitsa, they found debris that likely belonged to a drone.

Specialists from the police’s technical and explosive ordnance disposal unit are working at the scene—they are conducting the necessary checks and examining the debris found. The area has been cordoned off, and the circumstances of the incident are currently being investigated.

The police are continuing their investigation to determine all the circumstances of the incident.

It is worth noting that Russian targets regularly fly into Moldova as they attack the Odesa region. 

As Intent previously reported, during strikes on the Odesa region, a Russian drone-launched missile strayed into Moldovan territory and crashed into a cornfield, causing an explosion and a fire.

Recently, Russia has also begun deliberately targeting Ukraine’s border infrastructure with Moldova and Romania. Border crossing points and service areas are coming under attack.
