An online museum about the resistance to the occupation of Crimea has been created in Ukraine

An online platform called “Virtual Space of Memory: Museum of Crimean Resistance” has been launched in Ukraine. The project tells the stories of Crimean political prisoners through their letters, documents, and personal belongings.

Among the museum’s exhibits are rosary beads made of bread, which human rights activist and coordinatorof “Crimean Solidarity” Server Mustafayev created in a Russian prison for his son. Visitors to the virtual museum can also see the prison tag of released political prisoner Nariman Dzhelal, Appaz Kurtamet’s diary, as well as the T-shirts worn by brothers Asan and Aziz Akhtemov during their court hearing when the verdict was announced.

Relatives of political prisoners, former Kremlin captives, as well as human rights defenders and civil society activists have joined in the creation of the museum. They share their memories of torture, psychological pressure, and illness while in Russian captivity. These firsthand accounts complement official materials and documents. In addition, the project collaborates withthe Berlin“Mauermuseum am Checkpoint Charlie,” where the originals of some of the exhibits are currently on display.

The project’s main goal is to preserve the history of people who suffered from Russian oppression in Crimea, to tell their personal stories, and to prevent the occupiers from distorting the truth about the Crimeans’ resistance.
