Eskender Bariev, a member of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People and a human rights activist, reported that detainees at Pretrial Detention Center No. 2 in Akmesdzhit (Simferopol) are being held in “incommunicado” conditions. Twenty separate cells have been set up for them.
This was reported by Krym.Realii
“Just a week ago, we received information that on the third floor of Pretrial Detention Center No. 2, there are 20 separate cells where political prisoners are being held incommunicado. We also received information about which cells hold three people, which hold four, and which hold two. According to our estimates, about 56 people are being held incommunicado,” the human rights activist noted.
Also being held in this detention center are Oleg Platonov and Natalia Polyukh, a married couple from Sevastopol, as well as Eskender Bariev. The occupiers detained the man in Alushta, where he worked. Natalia was arrested while taking her nine-year-old child to school. Because of her detention, the child spent several months in a shelter until relatives were able to take her home.
“Incommunicado” status meansthe total isolation of a detainee or prisoner from the outside world, with no possibility of contacting anyone. A person in this condition is strictly prohibited from receiving visits from or corresponding with family members and is also deprived of the right to meet with a lawyer or an independent doctor. Under international law, such detention is considered a gross violation of human rights and a form of torture, as it creates a high risk of unpunished use of violence.
Earlier, Crimean politicalprisoner Marat Batirov, who spent more than six months in incommunicado detention while held by Russia, wrote a series of poems. He dedicated some of them to his friends and his grandson.
In his poetry, he speaks of injustice, thecruelty of war, and the strength of the human spirit, and expresses sincere gratitude to the friends who stood by him during the most difficult period of his life. In the poem to his granddaughter, he urges her never to lose her human dignity, strength of spirit, or faith in life, no matter the circumstances.
