As of the beginning of July, Kherson is home to about 60,000 people, which is about 25% of the pre-war population.
This was reported by Oleksandr Tolokonnikov, deputy head of the Kherson Regional Military Administration, during a telethon.
According to him, before the full-scale invasion, Kherson was home to about 300,000 people. In the spring of this year, about 55 thousand remained in the city, so there is a slight increase.
The Kherson CMA explains this by the fact that in the summer, people return to their homes to take care of their houses, clean the territory or plant vegetables - even despite the constant shelling and danger from drones.
"People are drawn home. Some come just to see their families and plan to leave again. Some come back for the summer to plant something. Despite the threats, life goes on," Tolokonnikov noted.
At the same time, the JMA predicts that the population will decrease again in the fall, as some people will go to safer regions for the winter.
The official also added that those who lost their homes due to shelling and cannot stay in the city are leaving more often.
On July 5-6 , Russian invaders shelled 34 settlements in Kherson region. Civilians were killed and injured as a result of the shelling. Houses, cars and infrastructure facilities were also damaged.
A day earlier, Russians shelled Kherson region from the air and ground, hitting residential areas and infrastructure in more than 40 settlements. Eleven people were injured, and dozens of houses, a gas station, a gas pipeline, and cars were destroyed.
On July 4, enemy drones repeatedly hit Kherson.
