A resident of Nova Kakhovka, former head of the Kherson "Northern Correctional Colony No. 90" 39-year-old Yevhen Sobolev, received a third suspicion from the State Bureau of Investigation - aiding the aggressor state. Earlier, the court sentenced him to life in absentia with confiscation of property for treason.
According to the Center for Investigative Journalism, SBI investigators found that Sobolev, while serving as the head of the Kherson "Northern Correctional Colony No. 90," voluntarily began to serve the Russian occupiers. The man contributed to the creation of the occupation department of the Federal Penitentiary Service in Kherson region. This structure was illegally registered on November 23, 2022. On June 9, 2023, Sobolev became the head of the USPS in the Kherson region and is still engaged in the execution of criminal sentences in the interests of the aggressor state.
For the crime, he was notified of suspicion of aiding the aggressor state.
Earlier, according to the CPJ, Sobolev had already received court convictions on two previously reported suspicions. Thus, on October 19, 2023, the Uzhhorod City District Court sentenced him in absentia to 13 years in prison with confiscation of all his property and deprivation of the right to hold positions related to the performance of organizational, administrative and economic functions for a period of 11 years. On September 9, 2024, the panel of judges of the Criminal Chamber of the Lviv Court of Appeal upheld the sentence and it came into force.
And on February 16, 2024, the Malynovskyi District Court of Odesa found Sobolev guilty of high treason and sentenced him to life in absentia with confiscation of property. The court proved that Yevhen Sobolev provided unimpeded access to the territory of the seized correctional colony No. 90 for the occupiers' trucks with sugar, flour and cigarettes for clandestine sale in the markets of Kherson. He helped the enemy repair military equipment, provided rest, leisure and medical treatment for the occupation forces.
