U.S. First Lady Melania Trump did not rule out the possibility of visiting Ukraine in person. She also thanked Pope Leo XIV for his support amid discussions about his role in negotiations for a local ceasefire.
This was reported by the American publication New York Post.
"We’ll see. It’s possible,” Melania Trump told reporters on Saturday, October 24, when asked about a possible trip to Ukraine. She spoke with the press alongside U.S. President Donald Trump after early voting in the midterm elections.
The First Lady spoke publicly for the first time about her involvement in the agreements on a local ceasefire for the city of Oleshky in the occupied part of the Kherson region. According to her, she spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and stated: “We talked. We signed an agreement.”
According to the publication, the agreement was intended to allow for the evacuation of Oleshky’s residents and the delivery of humanitarian aid. The city is located near the front lines, and its population consists mainly of the elderly and children.
Donald Trump praised his wife’s work, stating that she achieves better results than the professional negotiators in his administration. He also did not rule out the possibility that Melania might join future negotiations.
At the same time, questions have arisen regarding the role of Pope Leo XIV in the agreements. According to the New York Post, the pontiff spoke with Putin on October 16 and with Zelenskyy three days later, calling for a ceasefire. These contacts took place before Melania Trump announced that an agreement had been reached.
Melania Trump thanked the pontiff for his support. The article does not specify further developments regarding the ceasefire agreement or the possible evacuation of Oleshky residents.
