In Odesa, another violation of the language law was recorded at the Odesa Cable Car. Due to the lack of response to official inquiries and the business entity’s disregard for previous demands, another report was filed.
This was reportedbyAnna Nerush, a representative of the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language.
The inspection was prompted by complaints from citizens received over the course of several weeks. Visitors recorded a cable car employee announcing information over a loudspeaker in the aggressor’s language. Residents included audio and video evidence with their complaints.
Based on the complaints, the language ombudsman sent two official letters to the cable car operator demanding an explanation and relevant materials regarding the matter under review. However, the attraction’s administration ignored the Commissioner’s demands and failed to provide a response within the specified timeframe.
As of January 16, 2021, the default language of customer service in Ukraine is the state language. All business entities are required to provide information about goods and services in Ukrainian.
In accordance with Part 3 of Article 30 of the Law of Ukraine “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language,” personal customer service may be provided in another language acceptable to both parties, but only at the customer’s personal request. However, this exception applies only to individual communication and does not extend to public announcements, loudspeaker announcements, signs, or other forms of general information—these must always be provided in the official language.
As Intent previously reported, the Odessa comedy troupe“Maski” was issued a citation for a repeat violation of the language law. The reason was the sale of a ticket in Russian.
