Mykolaiv has seen a steady decline in the number of students and classes in schools in recent years.

This was announced during a live broadcast by Hanna Lychko, Head of the Education Department of the Mykolaiv City Council.

According to the city education department, from 2021 to 2026, the number of students decreased from 46,304 to 34,616. This is minus 11,688 children, or almost a quarter of the total.

At the same time, the number of classes decreased from 1,630 to 1,188. Thus, the educational network has lost 442 classes, which is approximately 27%.

As of the 2025-2026 school year, there are 64 educational institutions in Mykolaiv with 34,572 students.

Most institutions operate in a mixed or full-time format - 52 of them. Another 12 schools operate remotely.

In total, 68.1% of students are enrolled in full-time or mixed formats, while 31.9% are enrolled remotely.

Schools are also stepping up security measures and adapting the educational process to the war, but the downward trend in the number of children remains stable.

Experts attribute this to the security situation, families leaving the city and the overall decline in the city's population.

As a reminder, today in Mykolaiv, at a meeting of the Mykolaiv City Council, deputies considered the liquidation of three preschool education institutions.

Earlier, the Mykolaiv City Council decided to reorganize the city's healthcare network on a large scale. It envisages the merger of hospitals into a single structure and the transfer of one of the maternity hospitals to the ownership of the region.

At the time, Mayor Oleksandr Senkevych explained that the facility was unprofitable due to the low number of births and needed constant additional funding.

After the transfer:

  • it will be merged with the regional clinical hospital
  • it will be able to get a new status and funding
  • it will become part of the regional medical system

At the same time, significant funds have already been invested in the institution - tens of millions of hryvnias in repairs and equipment.

Earlier, Intent wrote that thanks to international partners and donors, two modernly equipped shelters were opened in Mykolaiv by the beginning of the new school year. The first one was opened in a joint educational space on the basis of a kindergarten and a gymnasium, and the second one was opened for another kindergarten in the city.
