Activists of the NGO Decolonization.Ukraine have updated the map with the number of streets that they believe should be renamed, counting 207 in Odesa region.

Odesa region continues to rank fifth in Ukraine in terms of the number of streets that should be renamed in the process of decommunization and decolonization of the country by region.

For comparison, in Mykolaiv region, the number of such streets was 73 compared to 111 a week ago, and in Kherson region, 66 compared to 94. However, in June 2024, there were 581 such streets in Odesa region, while in Mykolaiv and Kherson regions there were 407 and 156 non-decolonized streets, respectively.

Zaporizhzhia region remains the leader with 1,000 streets to be decolonized and no changes over the week, followed by Kharkiv region with 293 streets against 316 a week ago, and Kyiv region with 294 streets to be decolonized against 298 a week ago. Vinnytsia region, where, according to activists, 305 streets needed decolonization a week ago, now has 268 streets, ranking fourth.

The activists have always noted that the list is not exhaustive and will be adjusted in the future.

"The list is not exhaustive, sometimes there are streets named after local communist figures that no one knew about before. There are several communities that have not yet responded to our requests, so the map will be updated regularly," they emphasized.

Earlier, activists of the organization Decolonization. Ukraine" organization appealed to the Odesa City Council to dismantle 40 memorial plaques in the city, which they attributed to the Soviet and imperial heritage. Meanwhile, in Odesa, the city council instructed the Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture to create projects for the dismantling of Russian and Soviet monuments. Funds for the development of projects for the demolition of monuments with imperial symbols were allocated at a session of the Odesa City Council on December 4. Eleven monuments were discussed.
