Mykolaiv region farmers get a chance for revival after Kakhovka HPP explosion

After the destruction of the Kakhovka dam and the fighting, farmers in Mykolaiv region found themselves on the brink of survival, having lost access to water and resources for the sowing season. Now, international assistance should give hundreds of farms a chance to resume production and maintain food stability in the region.

Flanders, together with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), has allocated $ 1 million to implement a program to support small farms in the Mykolaiv region, which was significantly affected by the fighting and the destruction of the Kakhovka dam.
The initiative aims to restore the region's production potential and increase the resilience of local farms. In total, about 550 rural households and small agricultural producers will receive assistance.
The program will provide about 500 families with vegetable and potato seeds for the sowing campaign and improve food self-sufficiency. More than 50 more micro-farmers will receive greenhouse kits, micro-irrigation systems and special vouchers for farm development.
A separate area involves a technical assessment of soil conditions: experts will investigate the level of pollution and determine the necessary measures to restore fertility. It is also planned to repair and restore local irrigation systems damaged by the hostilities.
In addition to material assistance, farmers will receive training in climate-resilient farming to help them adapt their production to new conditions and improve the long-term efficiency of the region's agricultural sector.
In addition, in Mykolaiv region, farmers will be able to receive partial compensation for the costs of building and reconstructing reclamation systems. This means reimbursement of up to 50% of the costs, but not more than UAH 26,500 per hectare.
The region is also expanding support for the agricultural sector in other areas. In particular, farmers in the frontline areas will be reimbursed up to 30% of the costs of purchasing fish stock for aquaculture development.
