Due to the danger of flooding in the south of Odesa region, they plan to start shore protection of the Danube.
This became known during a meeting at the Izmail District State Administration.
During the meeting, officials and environmental experts discussed the urgent problems of the state of the Danube's protective dams and water exchange in the Danube lakes.
According to the Regional State Administration, one of the main threats is the destruction of the protective dam on the 97th kilometer of the Danube, which could lead to the flooding of wells that provide drinking water to about 100,000 people, as well as flooding of agricultural land. To prevent a catastrophe, it is planned to build a backup dam, the design of which is currently being updated.
The situation with the protective canal dam of the Skunda Canal is also critical, as it is eroded when the Kugurlui-Yalpug reservoirs are filled. This could cause the lock to stop working and flood up to a thousand hectares of land, leading to significant economic losses. The authorities are considering a major overhaul of the structure.
Special attention was paid to the problem of shallowing of water bodies due to disruption of water exchange between the Kyslytsky Arm and adjacent lakes, such as Katlabug and Kitay, which are important for reclamation and fishing. To address the situation, it is planned to widen the entrance to the Kyslytsky Arm, clear the resulting islands, and include it in the list of navigable inland waterways.
The condition of the Dunayets arm, which is almost completely silted up and overgrown with reeds, is also a serious concern, causing an unpleasant water odor and the threat of spreading infectious diseases. It is proposed to clear and deepen it.
Another environmental problem is the decrease in the water level in Lake China, which has led to siltation of the bottom and an increase in salinity, which negatively affects aquatic bioresources. Experts suggest regular replenishment of the reservoir and clearing of channels to restore natural water exchange.
The experts emphasized that the environmental problems of the Izmail district's water bodies need to be addressed immediately. Taking the necessary measures will not only preserve natural resources but also contribute to the sustainable development of the region.
