Berlin hosted a lecture titled "Archival Institutions of the Kherson Region: History, Occupation, Restoration."
According to the Kherson Regional Military Administration, the event was held as part of the educational project Festung Archiv Ukraine, organized by the Witold Pielecki Institute in Berlin and the Bundesarchiv. Iryna Lopushynska, Director of the State Archives of Kherson Oblast, and Dina Shelest, Head of the Archives Department of the Beryslav District State Administration, shared with Polish and German archivists their practical experience in organizing the work of Kherson Oblast archives under martial law.
"They talked about the relocation of archival funds from the de-occupied territories, the selection and creation of new collections, the work on accounting for archival funds stolen by the Russian occupiers, and the restoration of lost documents from SFD tapes ," the statement said.
Earlier, the BabynYar Holocaust Memorial Center digitized more than 1 million documents from the State Archives of Mykolaiv Oblast. The processing of the archives of the Mykolaiv region took place from March 2023 to February 2024. They contain documents that testify to the Holocaust on the territory of the modern Mykolaiv region and serve as a source for research papers, local history publications, documentary exhibitions, and more.
The Odesa Archaeological Museum has also begun photographing exhibits. So far, experts have already photographed a collection of glass found in ancient cities of the Northern Black Sea region and dishes of Trypillian culture. According to the museum staff, during a full-scale war, it is very important to preserve information about the collections of our museum, which have the status of national treasure, as exhaustively as possible. The work is funded by the UNESCO Emergency Fund for Heritage.
The Mykolaiv Regional Museum of Local Lore also digitized more than 1,000 old postcards and photographs from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These are unique street photographs of the old city, photos from family archives of famous Mykolaiv families, and documented scenes of various historical events in the life of the region.
