An outbreak of African swine fever has been reported near the village of Pokrovka, Mykolaiv region. In this regard, a meeting of the emergency antiepizootic commission was held.
This was reported by the Kazankivka village council.
It is noted that during the meeting, an action plan was approved to stop the spread of the virus. The territory of the beam at a distance of 2 km from Pokrovka was declared an epizootic focus, where quarantine was introduced for 40 days.
A 5 km protection zone covering Pokrovka, Pavlivka, Novolazarivka, Kopani and a 4 km surveillance zone with the settlements of Novovolodymyrivka, Troitsko-Safonove, Lozove, Mykolaivka, Myrne, Yavdotivka and hunting grounds was also established.
Additionally, a 4 km radius around the protection zone was defined, covering the settlements of the Kazankivska community and part of the Kryvyi Rih district of Dnipropetrovska oblast.
To control the situation, working groups of police, council representatives and veterinarians have been set up to conduct house-to-house visits and pig counts.
The village council emphasized that pig owners are prohibited from selling, moving or slaughtering pigs without permission. Local residents were urged to report sick or dead pigs by contacting the Bashtanka District Veterinary Service.
Earlier, a case of African swine fever was reported in the village of Krynychky, Mykolaiv district. As a result, quarantine was introduced in several villages in the region.
African swine fever (ASF) is a viral infectious disease that affects pigs. The disease was first detected in Africa in 1921. It is caused by a virus from the Asfarviridae family, which is the only representative of its kind. The disease is spread among pigs through contact with other sick animals, infected objects (such as clothing, shoes, tools) or food.
Pigs that are infected with ASF can die within a few days of infection. Symptoms include high fever, ulcerated skin lesions, skin discoloration, emissions, and others. Since the disease is highly contagious and has no cure, it is a serious threat to the global pig industry. Some countries strictly control the import of pigs and pork products to avoid the spread of the disease on their territory.
