In 2024, the Odesa City Hall, through cooperation with the UNDP Project, signed 23 ESCO contracts for the energy modernization of 23 educational institutions in the city.
This was reported by Deputy Mayor of Odesa Hanna Pozdnyakova.
According to her, when the agreements start working, it will save more than UAH 6 million or 1.5 thousand Gcal of heat energy annually, and the mayor's office is currently preparing 20 similar ESCO agreements, but in the healthcare sector.
The UNDP project envisages the use of an energy service mechanism, namely the conclusion of ESCO contracts that allow for the implementation of energy efficiency measures without any capital investment by communities. It works like this: energy service companies (ESCOs) implement energy efficiency measures and develop renewable energy in public buildings and utilities for their own or borrowed funds under the terms of an energy service contract. The companies recoup their investment through the money that the community saves on energy costs as a result of the energy-efficient solution over the life of the contract.
The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) is an organization within the United Nations system aimed at providing development assistance to UN member states. See also: International organizations: United Nations Development Program.
According to Anna Pozdnyakova, one of the main advantages of such contracts is that the ESCO company bears all costs (design, equipment, installation, maintenance, repair) during the contract period. Instead, upon completion of the contract, the equipment and materials are transferred free of charge to the community.
In July, as part of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) project "EU4UASchools: Build Back Better" project with the financial support of the European Union, a sports college damaged by Russian military aggression was restored in Mykolaiv.
