In the town of Bashtanka in the Mykolaiv region, swimming, fishing, and holding mass gatherings have been temporarily banned at one of the ponds. This decision was prompted by the results of laboratory tests, which detected the cholera vibrio in the water.

This was reported by the Bashtanka Territorial Community.

According to the city council, in June 2026, specialists conducted monitoring studies of surface water bodies. In one of the water samples taken from the “Central” pond in Bashtanka, a non-agglutinating strain of the cholera vibrio, group non-O1, was detected.

In light of this, local authorities have urged residents to temporarily refrain from:

  • swimming in the “Central” pond;
  • fishing;
  • holding sports and other mass events near the body of water.

Community officials emphasized that these measures are temporary and have been implemented to prevent the outbreak of acute intestinal infections.

Residents are asked to be understanding of the restrictions and to follow the recommendations to protect themselves and their loved ones.

The Bashtanka City Council also reported that residents will be updated on any changes in the situation once new laboratory test results are received.

What Is Known About the Cholera Vibrio

Vibrio cholerae is a bacterium that causes cholera, an acute intestinal infection. Here’s what is known about it.

How it is transmitted:

Infection occurs through contaminated water or food. Most commonly, it is transmitted through:

  • unboiled water from open sources;

  • fruits and vegetables washed with contaminated water.

Cholera is rarely transmitted from person to person, but it is possible through dirty hands.

Without treatment, the severe form can lead to death within a few hours.
