In Mykolaiv, the protective spit, which serves as a hydraulic structure and protects the Namiv neighborhood from flooding and erosion of the coastline, is gradually collapsing.

According to MikVisti, the problem was reported during a staff meeting at the city council by Serhiy Puchkov, head of the Chaika cooperative.

According to him, the spit was once created as an alternative to concrete shoreline reinforcement. It was meant not only to restrain waves and currents, but also to preserve residents' access to the coast.

"A little to the north is Spaska Spit. The river hits this Spasskaya Spit, then the Namiv. To prevent this from happening, everything could be built up with concrete. But this does not save from erosion. And secondly, it leaves our residents without recreation," explained Puchkov.

According to him, the area of the spit is now significantly decreasing due to natural processes and the human factor. Its condition is affected by the current, strong winds, and cars entering the territory.

"Today it is significantly reduced. Its condition is affected by the wind, the current, and people who drive there," he said.

The head of the cooperative called on the city authorities to engage specialized experts to assess the situation and to check the technical documentation that was developed when the spit was created. This, in his opinion, will help determine what measures are needed to preserve the structure.

Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych agreed that the situation needs to be studied in detail. He instructed Deputy Mayor Yuriy Andrienko and the city's chief architect Yevhen Polyakov to look into the matter.

At the same time, Senkevych noted that the city and regional budgets do not currently have funds for large-scale work to restore or strengthen the spit.

"At the very least, this issue should be raised. If the spit is being eroded, it's not a one-day process, but in any case, we need to address this issue," the mayor said.
