Odesa region was ranked eighth among the least polluted by hazardous waste generated by businesses in the regions of Ukraine.
This was reported by YouControl analysts based on data from the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources, Business in Ukraine.
According to the analysts, in 2024, corporate polluters generated 3,787 tons of hazardous waste in the region and reported to the Ministry 634 times. For comparison, 28,288 tons were generated in Mykolaiv region and 11 tons in Kherson region.
Overall, businesses in Ukraine generated more than 592 thousand tons of hazardous waste last year. The largest amount of pollutants is generated by the non-metallic industry, medical facilities, and the agricultural sector. The absolute leader with the highest concentration of hazardous waste is Zaporizhzhia region - 184 thousand tons, which is more than 31% of the national figure.
The second position is occupied by the city of Kyiv with more than 61 thousand tons. Not only large industrial complexes, but also logistics, medical, construction, and service companies, which are also sources of toxic substances, are de jure concentrated in the capital region.
The top five regions with the highest waste load also include Lviv - 53.8 thousand tons; Dnipro - 52 thousand tons; and Volyn - 37.1 thousand tons.
At the opposite end of the regional ranking are Donetsk (39 tons), Kherson (11 tons), and Luhansk (7 tons) regions. In this case, the low figures are due to a full-scale war, occupation of territories or temporary loss of control over them, which makes it impossible to keep correct statistical reporting through registration of the full volume of waste generation and accounting.
