A five-year-old boy died at a private clinic in Odesa while undergoing dental treatment under anesthesia. The anesthesiologist who was with the child has been charged.
This was reported by the police press office.
The doctor is 30 years old. According to the police, he faces up to three years in prison. He may also lose the right to hold certain positions and engage in certain activities for the same period.
He was charged under Part 2 of Article 140 of the Criminal Code. This article pertains to the improper performance of professional duties due to negligence, resulting in serious consequences.
In November 2025, a woman brought her son to a private dental clinic. The boy was diagnosed with multiple cavities in his baby teeth. The doctors prescribed treatment under general anesthesia, during which the child’s breathing is supported by a ventilator.
The dentist and anesthesiologist performed the first procedure in December without complications. The mother brought her son back a second time in early January 2026.
During the operation, the boy’s circulation stopped—that is, his heart stopped pumping blood. According to police, the anesthesiologist revived him after performing resuscitation measures.
The child was transported by ambulance from the dental clinic to the Odesa Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital. Despite intensive care, the boy died a few weeks later.
A forensic medical examination determined that the child’s death was caused by brain damage resulting from a lack of oxygen.
According to the investigation, during treatment under anesthesia, the anesthesiologist:
- failed to take measures to prevent fluid and residues of dental materials from entering the child’s airways;
- failed to ensure proper monitoring of the boy’s breathing;
- did not monitor carbon dioxide levels;
- did not immediately determine the cause of the cardiac arrest and did not take timely measures to resolve it.
Investigators gathered evidence, including the findings of several lengthy forensic examinations. Based on this evidence, the doctor was notified of the charges against him.
