A border guard suspected of fatally shooting a man near the border with Moldova has been extradited from Germany to Ukraine. He will now remain in custody without the right to bail.

This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General.

According to the investigation, after the shooting, the soldier fled across the border and was subsequently placed on an international wanted list.

The incident occurred on July 14, 2024, in the Odesa region. At that time, border guards stopped a taxi approximately 15 kilometers from the border with Moldova. Four soldiers were traveling in the car; they had left their training unit and were planning to cross the border illegally on foot.

After the car was stopped, two passengers attempted to flee. One man was detained, while the pursuit of the other continued.

The detainee was left under the supervision of a border guard. His colleague handed the soldier his service pistol.

According to the investigation, the border guard shot the detainee, even though he posed no threat to the life or health of others. The man sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.

A few days after the shooting, the soldier illegally crossed the Ukrainian border and fled to Germany.

He was charged in absentia with intentional homicide and abuse of authority. After an international arrest warrant was issued, he was detained for extradition to Ukraine.

On October 19, 2026, the suspect was handed over to Ukraine at the border with Poland.

The court ordered him to be held in custody without the right to bail. Under the charges brought against him, he faces up to 15 years in prison.
