Ukrainian special services and law enforcement agencies have detained a collaborator who, during the first months of Russia's full-scale invasion, headed the occupation "police" in Nova Kakhovka in Kherson region.

According to the SBU, the man was a former security guard of a local private security company and agreed to cooperate with the Russian invaders after the city was seized.

As the head of the pseudo-police, he organized patrols on the streets of the city, persecuted Ukrainian activists and collaborated with the so-called "military commander of the Russian Federation." After being dismissed from his post in April 2022, the collaborator fled to Crimea, and from there to the EU countries, where he was hiding for a long time.

At the end of 2024, he returned to Ukraine under the guise of an ordinary citizen and settled in Volyn, renting a house. However, law enforcement officers established his whereabouts and detained him.

The man was notified of suspicion under three articles:

  • ч. 3 of Article 28, Part 6 of Article 111-1 (cooperation committed by an organized group);
  • ч. 7, Art. 111-1 (voluntary holding of a position by a citizen of Ukraine in illegal judicial or law enforcement bodies established in the temporarily occupied territory);
  • ч. 3 of Art. 146 (illegal imprisonment or abduction of a person committed by an organized group).

The SBU added that the offender is in custody and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

In February, a former law enforcement officer who worked for the Russian invaders during the occupation was detained in Kherson region.

Prior to that, investigators had served suspicion notices to two residents of Kherson who had worked for the enemy in a "police department" during the occupation of the city.

A former police major from the Kherson region who voluntarily defected to the occupiers was also tried.
