Lent is a special period of spiritual purification and preparation for Easter, the most important Christian holiday. In 2025, Lent will begin on March 3 and last until April 19, ending with the Holy Resurrection of Christ - Easter, which will be celebrated on April 20.

What you can eat on the first day of Lent and on other days

During Lent, you can eat a moderate amount of simple, frugal foods that are common to our culture and area.

Before you start fasting, you should ask your confessor for a blessing.

The first four days of fasting and the entire Holy Week (the last week) are considered the most strict. On Clean Monday (the first day of the fast) and Good Friday (the last day before Easter), it is forbidden to eat food. On the first Friday of Lent, only boiled wheat with sugar or honey is allowed.

On Saturday and Sunday, it is allowed to eat oil, and on the Annunciation (April 7) and Palm Sunday, fish.

Relaxation in fasting

Observance of Lent implies giving up meat, dairy products, and eggs. However, there are exemptions for:

  • children, pregnant and lactating women;
  • the elderly;
  • people with chronic illnesses who need special nutrition;
  • military personnel and those who perform heavy physical labor.

The significance of each week of Lent

The first week (March 3-9) is the beginning of Lent. It is a time of spiritual purification and repentance. The first days are the strictest.

The second week (March 10-16) honors St. Gregory Palamas, who emphasized the importance of prayer.

The third week (March 17-23) is the week of the cross. Believers pray in front of the cross in churches.

The fourth week (March 24-30) is dedicated to the memory of St. John the Baptist, who taught how to overcome sinful temptations.

The fifth week (March 31-April 6) is dedicated to the honoring of St. Mary of Egypt as a symbol of repentance.

The sixth week (April 7-13) is Palm Sunday, the entry of the Lord into Jerusalem.

Holy Week (April 14-19) is a special time of remembrance of the suffering of Christ before His Resurrection.

Palm Sunday

A week before Easter, on April 13, 2025, Orthodox Christians will celebrate Palm Sunday. This day commemorates the solemn entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, and believers bless the willow tree as a symbol of the victory of life over death.
