<span><span><span><span><span><span>At its 48th session, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) inscribed the World Heritage site “The Ancient City of Chersonesos in Taurica and its Chora” on the List of World Heritage in Danger.</span></span></span></span></span></span>
<span><span><span><span><span><span>This was announced on social media by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga. </span></span></span></span></span></span>
<span><span><span><span><span><span>The minister also noted that the inclusion of Tauric Chersonesos on the List of World Heritage Sites in Danger calls on the international community to strengthen cooperation in preventing the illicit trafficking of cultural property from the temporarily occupied Crimea. </span></span></span></span></span></span>
<span><span><span><span><span><span>Chersonesos Taurica is an ancient city-state founded by Greek colonists in the 6th century B.C. in southwestern Crimea (within the boundaries of modern-day Sevastopol).This city was one of the main centers for the spread of Christianity in the region and one of the “7 Wonders of Ukraine.” In 2013, the site was inscribed on the World Heritage List. Since 2014, the Russian occupying authorities have been conducting illegal excavations and large-scale construction projects there.</span></span></span></span></span></span>
Earlier, it was reportedthat the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) will hear the case of ten Ukrainian children abducted by the occupiers. Human rights activists call this an exceptional procedural development, as such hearings are scheduled outside the Grand Chamber only in rare cases. In addition, the European Court has already exchanged written communications with the parties twice, which is also an atypical practice. The ECHR’s upcoming decision could set an important legal precedent and serve as an additional argument in the international prosecution of Russia for the illegal removal and forced change of identity of Ukrainian children.
