Police officers together with the military law enforcement service detained a military serviceman in Odesa who was extorting money from a person liable for military service, threatening to send him to an assault unit.

This was reported by the press service of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Odesa Oblast.

According to the investigation, after learning of the Odesa resident's desire to serve in the rear, he told him that he could help by influencing the head of one of the district recruitment and social support centers and the respective commanders of the Armed Forces training centers, with whom he allegedly had excellent connections. The soldier estimated his services at $5,000. In case of non-payment of this amount, he threatened the man with mobilization to an assault unit.

The law enforcement documented that the serviceman received a USD 1.5 thousand deposit and copies of the client's personal documents in his car. Investigators seized the cash, documents and car as material evidence, and the offender was detained in accordance with the procedural procedure.

During an authorized search at the detainee's place of residence, the police found and seized two cases of preliminary combat grenades, fuses and about 800 rounds of ammunition of various calibers. The seized items were sent for forensic examination in the framework of criminal proceedings over illegal handling of weapons, ammunition or explosives.

The serviceman was also served a notice of suspicion of obtaining an unlawful benefit for himself for influencing the decision-making of a person authorized to perform state functions, combined with extortion of such benefit. According to current legislation, if proven guilty, the man faces up to eight years in prison with confiscation of property. The court imposed on the suspect a custodial restraint with the right to be released on bail in the amount of UAH 332,800.
