Watermelon harvesting is in full swing in the fields of the Kherson region. As of early August, farmers have already harvested about 3,000 metric tons of watermelons, which will soon be available on store shelves across various regions of Ukraine.

This was announced by Oleksandr Prokudin, head of the Kherson Regional Military Administration, on the occasion of International Watermelon Day.

According to him, this year the Kherson region plans to harvest about 25,000 metric tons of melon crops. The total area planted with watermelons is approximately 1,000 hectares.

The largest areas planted with melons are located in the Velykooleksandrivka, Novovorontsov, Muzykovka, Bilozerka, and Kherson communities.

The regional governor thanked local farmers for their work, emphasizing that they are the ones who preserve the tradition of growing Kherson watermelons, which have long been one of the region’s symbols.

“International Watermelon Day is a great occasion to once again say thank you to everyone who makes this fruit a symbol of the Kherson region. For their hard work and for that taste that cannot be replicated—the taste of a real Kherson watermelon,” said Oleksandr Prokudin.

Despite the full-scale war, mined fields, and constant Russian shelling, farmers in the Kherson region continue to grow melons and cucumbers, gradually restoring production in the de-occupied communities.

As a reminder, in 2026, plans were in place to increase the area of irrigated land to 5,000 hectares in the de-occupied part of the right bank of the Kherson region. Currently, irrigationhas already been restored on 4,000 hectares, which accounts for nearly 10% of the pre-war irrigated area.
