The Kyiv District Court of Odesa has imposed a pretrial detention measure on a man suspected of opening fire on military personnel at the Territorial Recruitment and Social Support Center. He has been remanded in custody until September 30 without the right to post bail.

This was reported by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

During the court hearing, the suspect stated that he regretted his actions. According to him, he did not intend to shoot at the soldiers but only wanted to “scare off the attackers” when he heard cries for help through the window.

The man claimed that he saw five people knock another man to the ground. According to him, they were wearing masks and had no identifying marks or body cameras, so he assumed they were members of an organized criminal group.

At the same time, the defense asked the court to impose a less severe pretrial measure—24-hour house arrest. However, the court rejected this motion and ruled to keep the suspect in custody until September 30 without the option of bail.

The day before, police reported thatthe shootingoccurred around 7:30 p.m. during a check of military registration documents. That same evening, law enforcement officers detained a 32-year-old man who, according to preliminary reports, fired a Flobert-caliber pistol at the military personnel.

As the shooter’s neighbors told Intentu, he lived with his wife and two-year-old daughter and did not cause any trouble, unlike the previous tenants of that apartment, who abused drugs. He was polite and always helped his neighbors. It should be noted that a playground where children were playing is located right next to the scene of the attack.

According to neighbors, the reason for his aggression toward the TCC employees may have been that he was nearly “busified”; he managed to escape home but was forced to leave his car and documents behind.
