Sign language interpretation is planned for sessions of the Mykolaiv City Council

At a meeting of the City Council’s Standing Committee on Human Rights, Children, Family, the Rule of Law, Transparency, Anti-Corruption Policy, Local Self-Government, Council Members’ Activities, and Ethics, the Mykolaiv City Council decided to direct the council’s administrative office to provide sign language interpretation for plenary sessions. This will ensure transparency and accessibility of information regarding the activities of local authorities for people with hearing impairments.

Yevhen Bohachenko, head of the Mykolaiv City Council’s municipal enterprise “City Information and Computing Center,” noted that the technical implementation of this decision is possible using modern technologies, in particular, artificial intelligence.

The issue was considered following a letter from a representative of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, which addressed ensuring the implementation of the principles of equality, non-discrimination, and unimpeded access to public information for people with hearing impairments. Olga Vinogradova, Chair of the non-governmental organization “Invaservice Center for Socially Inclusive Assistance,” also submitted a request regarding this issue.

Earlier in Mykolaiv, a tender for waste sorting failed. The sole participant did not score the minimum number of points, so city authorities will announce a new selection process in the near future. This year, participants were evaluated based on nine criteria.
