Russia's strikes on sunflower oil storage facilities have damaged the ecology of Odesa region by 13 billion

Experts from the State Environmental Inspectorate of the Southwestern District have calculated that two strikes on ships in Odesa region ports caused environmental damage worth UAH 13.6 billion.

According to the inspectorate's press service, these were hits that occurred a year apart.

On October 9, 2024, there was a large-scale leakage of more than 125 tons of sunflower oil into the Dry Estuary caused by the destruction of port infrastructure as a result of a missile attack. The amount of environmental damage calculated by the inspection amounted to UAH 10.9 billion.

Exactly a year later, on October 9, 2025, the situation repeated itself. New destruction of the same facility caused environmental damage again. This time, the damage amounted to UAH 2.7 billion.

On October 9, 2025, Odesa region was attacked by attack drones, damaging houses, the port, and energy infrastructure. Five people were injured, and more than 30,000 customers lost power. Containers with vegetable oil and wood pellets caught fire in the port.

In the evening of October 9, Russian occupation forces fired another missile attack on Odesa region. The port infrastructure of the region was under attack. The attack also damaged a civilian ship flying the Panamanian flag, the container ship Shui Spirit. It was the third foreign vessel to be attacked by Russians in four days.

Before that, Russia attacked a civilian vessel inthe ports of Odesa region. A ballistic missile damaged the Palau-flagged OPTIMA. One person died as a result of the enemy attack. Five other foreign nationals, crew members, were injured.
