Archaeologists discovered ancient Roman coins in Kerch, Crimea
This was reported by the Crimean Wind Reserve TV channel.
The report says that a rare denarius was unearthed in Kerch near the Church of St. John the Baptist. Archaeologists described the ancient coins found on the Crimean peninsula in 2018. According to the scientists, the finds include rare specimens of both Bosporan and Roman, as well as Byzantine and Italian coins. Some of the finds date back to the time of the Crimean Khanate.
It is noted that according to the conclusions of experts from the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, archaeologists managed to dig up 82 coins in total: 51 of them are Bosporan, three are Roman, 18 are Byzantine, one is Italian, and two more coins are from the Crimean Khanate. The scientists also discovered coins belonging to the Russian Empire of the 18th and 19th centuries - a total of four specimens of such coins were found. The remaining three have not yet been identified by experts. The artifacts are currently in the East Crimean Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve. The most interesting find was a Roman coin - the Salerno denarius of Landulf of Conza (973 - after 979).
Due to the temporary occupation of the peninsula, the accuracy of the information cannot be verified.
Earlier it was reported that in Crimea, the occupiers completely destroyed the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Tauric Chersonese in Sevastopol. Russians are destroying original architectural monuments and building new buildings in their place. For example, in 2015-2016, developers blocked the archaeological remains located on the surface, such as towers, walls, and columns, with observation decks. Subsequently, an amphitheater was erected on the site of the ancient citadel, which puts a load of about a ton on the original structure. In addition, a significant part of the artifacts found on the site was taken to Russia: frescoes, dishes, household items, and icons. The construction of theNew Chersonesos archaeological park has since begun on the site of the necropolis.
