Only 10% of pre-war irrigation areas restored in Kherson region

In 2026, the de-occupied part of the right bank of the Kherson region plans to increase the area of irrigated land to 5,000 hectares. Irrigation has already been restored on four thousand hectares.

This was announced by Dmytro Yunusov, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Irrigation Development of the Kherson Regional State Administration.

According to him, the region continues to restore the Ingulets irrigation system. In 2024, the company managed to repair the culvert, which provided access to irrigation on an area of about 3,000 hectares. In 2025, farmers restored irrigation systems on thousands more hectares.

According to Oleksandr Averchev, head of the Department of Agriculture at Kherson State Agrarian and Economic University, before the full-scale invasion, there were about 40,000 hectares of irrigated land on the right bank of the Kherson region. We are talking about both drip irrigation and sprinklers.

As of the beginning of June 2026, almost 10% of the pre-war irrigation area has been restored. At the same time, farmers are using modern energy-saving technologies, which allows them to use resources more efficiently and maintain agricultural production.

As a reminder, the Cabinet of Ministers agreed on a payment mechanism for Kherson region farmers on January 21.

As a result, farmers in the Kherson region received hundreds of millions of hryvnias in state support for damaged crops. These are payments accrued for applications submitted in 2025.

A severe drought in 2026 forced farmers to abandon sunflower. This crop, despite its general drought tolerance, requires a significant amount of moisture during key growth phases: head formation and flowering. Due to a lack of moisture on the right bank, farmers are abandoning the crop.
